The contemporary Oweekeno artist and painter Steve Smith Dla’kwagila is widely regarded for his unusual abstraction of the structures of traditional design and for his exceptional use of colour theory as a way to elevate and electrify his work. Steve has been a full-time artist for 25 years, but he began working in this full contemporary conceptual style in 2013 and has since been acclaimed and collected by individuals and institutions around the world.
Using overlapping shapes, contrasting colours and playful perspectives, Steve’s work conveys emotion and meaning that affects the viewer in an unusual way. The messages of optimism in his work are immediately felt. Themes of connection, love, peace and harmony are continually emerging. Steve’s intent is to convey deeper meanings of community and unity that prompt the viewer to reflect on life and balance, creating a sense of well-being.
“I try to invite the viewers to just feel the artwork and let the images and colours sit in their hearts, even for a second. I hope this can bring a sense of playfulness and gratitude for the world we are all a part of.”
The Steinbrueck Gallery is thrilled to present five new spectacular works of art that Steve has created for the international StART.art 2021 exhibit in London UK, hosted by the prestigious Saatchi Gallery. Chosen to participate alongside 70 other artists from around the world, Steve is honored to contribute to the continued exposure of Oweekeno art across the globe.
