During ceremonial performances of the past and present, the most important wearable symbol of respect and status is known as a Chilkat blanket. These were highly-coveted, loom-woven masterpieces made from mountain goat wool and colored with rare blues, greens and yellows. A Chilkat blanket requires intense focus and attention to create, usually taking two or more years to complete. They feature elaborate, precise geometric patterns of ovoids and u-forms unseen in most other artwork. My version is a little more tongue-in-cheek. I often find that blanket statements cause puzzlement, misunderstanding and the inability to express viewpoints. This painting is a reminder that our words have consequences and they impact others around us. Although the piece may appear to be like a woven Chilkat, it is not a blanket at all. It’s here to keep the viewers diligent, respectful and concise in our words.
