One Gray Hair explores the intersection of Tlingit and Western beauty standards, where gray hair has opposing values. The painting is a reaction to the artist’s first gray hair and her impulse to remove it immediately, and how it conflicted with the knowledge that gray hair was prized by Tlingit culture for generations past.
