Gary Olver - Masterful Miniatures

Catlinite and Argillite Sculptural Works

Widely known as one of the finest Indigenous carvers working in detailed miniatures, Gary Olver is celebrated for his exceptional workmanship in catlinite and argillite stone, as well as his superb abalone, copper, and mother-of-pearl inlay.

Gary is a Woodland Cree artist, born in 1966. At nine years old, his family moved to the west coast of British Columbia, where he was introduced to the rich traditions of the Haida Nation. He spent his formative years learning the structure and design of Northwest Coast art, but it wasn’t until many years later that he took a serious creative approach to the artwork.

After a debilitating accident, and with encouragement from his Haida mentors, he spent years honing his carving skills as a form of physical therapy, eventually reaching a level that allowed him to pursue his career as a full-time artist.

Today, Gary is an unparalleled creative force in his field—an artist unlike any other. His focus and skill in detailing the smallest fin, feather, and fur are both charming and astonishing. From every angle, his pieces challenge the mind and the imagination.

We’re honored to share this collection of extraordinary miniatures, created for us over the last three years, with our collectors and friends.
