Mabel Nigiyok
Inuit
Mabel Nigiyok was born in 1938 in the Cook River region. She spent her early life moving seasonally with her family between the Minto Inlet coast during winter months and inland lakes and waterways in summer. The family relocated to Holman in 1966.
Mabel entered the Holman printshop in 1981 where she trained in stencil printmaking; her first works were published the following year. Over time she emerged as one of the studio’s most active contributors, with 63 drawings produced as prints. She has printed 39 editions herself, many drawn from her own compositions. Prior to settling in Holman, Nigiyok supported the co-op by sewing sealskin mats while living on the land.
