Erik Prytula
Haida
Erik Prytula is a Haida artist and Indigenous entrepreneur who operates out of Kamloops BC. He is from the Eagle clan Tsiits Gitanee clan of Haida Gwaii.
Erik specializes in traditional Haida formline. He paints acrylic paint on canvas and cedar, carves red and yellow cedar, and sculpts a rare rock called argillite. In 2016 he was mentored by master artist Reg Davidson who taught him how to carve cedar.
Major public art features that Erik has created are the Taking Flight mural for Thompson Rivers University, a portrait mask for the Vancouver Airport, a Raven Steals the Light painting for the BC Nurses Union, and hand painted masquerade masks for Fashion Speaks International. He also has art pieces featured in New Relationship Trust Company, as well as the First Nations Tax commission.
The majority of Erik’s works a have been sold to private buyers. Erik considers art a means of keeping in touch with his culture as well as a way of inspiring the next generation of First Nations youth.
