Raven had all the water in a box, and would not share with anyone. Dog was thirsty, and chased Raven for days trying to get the box of water. While Dog was chasing Raven, Raven dropped the box and spilt water all over Dog.

Now, water went everywhere. The water kept running and running and running, until some of the water got tired and stayed in one place. That water is known as lakes. The other water is still running, and is known as streams and rivers and oceans....

The Skokomish people are known as the People of the Water. One of the Skokomish symbols are known as the dog, and also known as Water Dog. When you see the Skokomish people on the water, we call them Water Dogs."
