Harrison Martin

Tsimshian/Nisga'a

Harrison Martin was born in 2003 and is from the Tsimshian and Nisga’a Nations on the Skeena and Nass Rivers in Northwest British Colombia. As a teen, he became dedicated to reconnecting with his indigenous culture.

Harrison started carving in 2021 in Victoria, BC. He began an apprenticeship under Kwakwaka’wakw artist Rande Cook, who helped teach him the basics of formline design, carving and painting. Once he learned these creative skills in Northwest Coast traditional art, Harrison spent his time working in his own shop, experimenting with paints and colors, and gaining experience in operating his own studio.

Harrison won an Emerging Artist Scholarship from the YVR Art Foundation with his submission, a carved panel titled “Northern Life.”

In early 2023, he began his second apprenticeship under the renowned Nuu-Chah-Nulth carver Moy Sutherland. Under Moy’s guidance, Harrison began learning new elements of design and new carving techniques. He continues to work with Moy, further developing his knowledge of his culture and art.

Harrison’s pieces can be found in private collections across North America and in galleries in Victoria, Vancouver, and Seattle.
