This spiral appears to be painted in an “old-school” style at first glance, but it’s actually quite modern and it bridges the past with the present. The title “The Past Shapes the Future” is a reference to the style that I worked in for many years of my earlier career and how I’ve changed over the years. The style of this piece is an echo of the historic work of my ancestors, but it has the flavour of something new and unexpected. There are no specific animals featured in the piece, but instead there are echoes of the bold nature of Oweekeno art blended with the fine detailing of my current style. The colours are reflective of the organic tones of history, but on closer inspection you can see subtle variations that are completely modern.
