“The coat hanger. & the monster of unsafe abortions.

My peers and I grew up hearing about a time in America when women had to resort to unsafe measures of abortions, but it was taught as a bygone era. We couldn’t imagine that women would ever lose the right to bodily autonomy. Our rights were a given, right?

But the deep sexism and racism that founded this country was alive and well in the hearts of many. Sometimes concealed, but now emboldened by a twice impeached president who did not win the popular election.

And now we see the monster walking among us. I am afraid for the women who will suffer unsafe circumstances, both from unsafe abortions and partners who do not want a child. I am afraid for the rights of our LGBTQ+ relatives. I am deeply unsettled that a document written by men hundreds of years ago to legitimize their own views is still the standard by which to govern the modern world.

And so, a coat hanger. & the monster of America”.
